Detectable Worth by KaizokuShojo Detectable Worth by KaizokuShojo
As a note before anything else: this was EXTREMELY rushed. I had almost zero time to do this between babysitting nephews and going to work and sleeping, so I hope that's taken into account. :tears: I didn't even get to detail the background, or get a good scan.....

This is for a contest for #PremiumMembers. The contest was to go to a random word generator they provided and get a two-word phrase, and be inspired by it to draw something.

My phrase was "Detectable Worth." I thought pretty fast of an image... It was Reg Barclay in the foreground, Commander Data farther in the background, all in Main Engineering on the Enterprise-D. It came to mind because, for one, it seemed like a Data-phrase. XD For another thing, Data is one of the only ones who didn't really seem to think ill of Reg's shyness and awkwardness. So, he...detected Reg's worth, both as a person and as a crewman of the Enterprise...

So that's the story behind that. I'll most likely do more to this later. I'm rushing beyond rushing as is. >< (It's only about 14 minutes 'til the deadline as I type this.)

EDIT: I forgot to mention in first writing of the description (since I was rushed XD) that there...is no Data in this picture. XD Not yet, at least. Perhaps one day, to the viewer's right in a part that's cropped. But anyway, imagine that he's the one seeing Reg, and that off to the side toward the warp core there are some people snickering about something poor Lt. Barclay did.... Something not even worth laughing at...

EDIT 2: I've added a lot of random little things, and rescanned. I added a lot of black (Copic 110 Special Black) and some LCARS displays (Sakura Gelly Roll White on the black) and some various shading and such. I dislike the extremely messed-up job I did on the table. Much failure, especially in perspective. Ah well. :P

all right, i'm finally getting to commenting again XD' *lazy* *has been staring at it for days though*

*ahem* wow~! :wow: you call that "messed-up" on the table??? all i can say is, :worship: holy cow that looks so...so...realistic! and just amazing, and perfect, and detailed, and...how did you make it so amazing that small? and i don't just mean the table, i mean all of it. all of your details are just...wow, as always. and you know what, even if you see mistakes, i say...you have an incredible, unmatchable talent for bringing life to a pic. it's all just wow... my fave part would have to be...all of it! :iconbarclaylaplz:

oh, and this scan makes his hair look much better. :) you're right, scanners can make or break a pic... *stares at wow details in awe* they even look like the right texture of an LCARS panel, how do you do that??? how do you get multiple textures just using ink??? it's just wow. i love it forever.

Mm....well, perspective failure is one example. XD Various areas of lack of detail...the bad job I did colouring in his uniform's black areas (not as noticable in this scan)... Things like that. XD

What a great phrase you got! And Barclay is TOTALLY the perfect choice for it! :squee: The background looks detailed to me, though. :O I mean, at least there IS one. And all the lines are straight and make sense. :D

But man, I love how perfectly you can draw him. :D Plus all those clothing details and shading. :iconinterestingplz: I need to figure out how to do that... His expression is just so perfectly Barclay-ish too. :meow: I wanna give him a hug. :aww:

Best of luck to you in the contest!

It was an inspiring phrase. XD
It's getting more detailed, progressively... I just have to finish it more, and replace this horrible scan. :P Ugh. It's driving me nuts--even at this stage, it looked better in person, this scan is so bad. XD

Thanks. :D He's incredibly fun to draw, which is just more that's great aboout him...
Aw, thanks. :) It just takes..observation, and practice. XD
Quite. XD

Thanks! :D

That's cool. :D But really, I think it's universally understood in the art world that scanners are murderous and everything looks better in person. ^^; So I wouldn't worry about it too much. I know my scanner absolutely destroys my art work. :faint: So yeah, I think everyone knows it looks better in person. :) Plus I think it looks great to start with, so... :giggle:

You're welcome. :) That's awesome! I love when drawing stuff you want to is actually fun. :giggle: Yup. Observation. I'll start by observing your art. :XD: I'll get to the practice part later. :shifty:

You're wecome~. :D

Well, I can actually often enough get things to look 'better' or just as good overall when scanned, but I have to take time with it to adjust the settings over and over and over... :faint: But I paid a bit extra to make sure I got a fairly decent one... Leave it to its own devices, though, and it doesn't turn out well. :P The next scan'll be better. It'll also have more in it. XD

Me too. :D Actually, #StarTrek-Club is having a contest with favourite trek episodes, so I may enter that.... Will of course be doing The Nth Degree. XD

That's actually not so bad an idea, as long as you like my art enough to learn from me. XD I observed a lot of artists I liked...it's as close as I can get to being taught from them. XD Asking questions is good, too.

Oh, well that's good. :D I know there are ways I can improve my art, meticulously in photoshop, but I still feel that everything looks smoother in person. ^^; But it's nice that you have that dedication to adjust everything. :D I really don't know how decent my scanner is or isn't, but I just feel like most scanners mess pictures up so much so that people can't just scan a picture and post it. ^^;
I look forward to it. :D

Ohhhhh, nice! I think you should try to enter if you can. :D It'll be great! :D

I mean, I really don't know what I'm doing with my style, but I like the way you draw expressions, poses, shading, and folds, so it wouldn't surprise me if I go looking through your art for reference every now and again. :XD: Yeah, I've looked through other artists stuff for help before. :XD: Sometimes I even send my sketches to some of them that I know better (and they put up with me more tolerably), and ask them for advice. ^^;

There are tutorials here on dA about how to scan your art...for the most part, it just has to do with adjusting the Levels. But not every scanner/scanning program has that as an option, so...:P Photoshop and GIMP help, too, of course. Fine post-processing is generally a must to make it look right.

I actually have finished all the edits I think I'm going to do to it for now, and reuploaded...

I will try, certainly. XD

It's hard to know what you're doing with a style... The best thing to do is to do a lot of sketch dumps, and pull together what you see in life and what you think is best from other artists, and see what is birthed from that.

Yeah, I get that. I adjust the levels and such sometimes, but it doesn't seem to make a huge difference on my computer. Maybe I'm just doing it wrong.
Mmhmm, that's why I'm really glad I have photoshop. ^^;

Awesome! :squee: I can't wait to see it.

Hurray! :D

Oh yeah, I do a fair amount of sketchdumps. :XD: I've been looking at art I like, and also seeing what animated movies might do with their art to get a certain affect... I think it's helping at least a little. :) Thanks for the advice~! :D

Thanks! :) The scan is terrible, though... :P I was in such a huge rush... I'm going to rescan/touch it up whenever I can. And probably do more to it... That's why I haven't submitted it yet to the #Dwight-Schultz-Group...

RRRRRRRRRRREG!!!! :squee: any reg drawing is a good drawing, rushed or not. because it's reg. i wish you'd had time to draw data :/ but, since i finished my entry just minutes before yours, i totally understand running out of time...>> but brava! we made it! yours is so much better than mine, i hope you win... and what a perfect phrase and idea, totally reg-like.

overall, i think it looks fantastic! it looks just like him, it's great! the proportions, his expression, even the shape of his hands is perfect. :D i don't know how you got that amazing perspective in the background but it's fantastic. when i see things like this i dream about when you'll be a mangaka someday... you clearly have the skills! :D

if i had to find something wrong with it, i'd say the PADD is too small, and his hair looks too neat xD but maybe he really wanted it to look perfect that day or something XDD

wow, how do you do that with ink... the details on his hands alone is just mind-boggling to me. and i wish i could do clothing folds so naturally and perfect the way you do... i love it, it's awesome! :D

Well, that's true enough.
Totally ran out of time. >[
Thanks. :)

I don't think so. XD And, I didn't do any perspective. >>; If you compared it with the actual shot I used as reference, well.... ._. And the scan is horrid. I have to redo it. :/ I was in too much of a hurry. Normally I take quite a few scans, very carefully, and try to get the best...not this time...

The PADD was small in the pic. XD There are small PADDs, too...
Reg is careful about his hair. XD :P I know the hair looks bad...I rushed it to the extreme. But even that on the original looks better...
Don't mention mangaka.

I like the left hand, at least.
The clothing folds are awful.
And, I used a very tiny pen.

you going to add data later on, or just the background and such?

just take the compliment XD i think the background looks great, and it'll look even better with more detail.

i'm not sure i've seen them that small, but i trust your reference XD
he is indeed. and it doesn't look bad, it just looks...moussed? XD

i think both hands look great. the clothing folds are fantastic XD i guess i ought to buy a tiny pen... oh, i found six microns the other day. *stares at them* *wonders how many have ink* i don't have one of the smallest though, which is what i think i would need for inking, since i'm so detail-prone when it comes to hair and the like... it doesn't show in my work, but generally i like to do tiny lines first, just the very basics of things...and then i skribble over, doing repeated lines, making things heavy..../random

Likely. I'm already adding to the background. This scan is driving me nuts. :[

Pft.

Pft. Pay attention.

I have size 05, 03, 01, and 005 of Microns, and size 0.3, 0.1, 0.05, and 0.03 of the Copic Multiliners. The little pens are very useful.

so data, or no data...? since i know you've moved on to other reg art. :meow:

accept my compliments. they're very sincere. :iconseriousnodplz:

eek. my smallest micron is 01, and i think it's out of ink... i know my 05 is, almost positive... i would like an 005 if i ever return to inking someday.

You need a memory-enhacing game so I don't have to keep repeating myself to you. Yes, eventually, I want to add Data. But not right now.
:iconblanklaplz:

01 Microns aren't small at all. That's what I do my main linework with. You can't get any detail at all with an 05, so I just use those to fill in large spaces of black. Well, I'm more apt to use black Copic for that now, since it scans smoother, and I can layer pen over it.
I don't know if you could handle an 005...you have to be extremely light with it. XD
